Bicycle Advocates for Annapolis & Anne Arundel County (“BikeAAA”) is pleased to release our 2020 Annual Report and state of county biking! 2020 was a challenging year due to the pandemic but biking certainly had a boom which we expect to continue for years to come. Our advocacy efforts strengthened and we continue to make progress.

Among the 2020 Highlights:

  • 3 Foot Safe Passing Bill enacted requiring at least 3 feet on ALL Maryland roads
  • Kim Lamphier Maryland Bikeways program bill enacted and increased funding secured
  • Approximately 28 new miles of bikeways (trails and on-road lanes) since 2016 added by County, City of Annapolis, SHA and developers including app. 5.5 miles in 2020; total now 84 miles
  • Expanded our Wheels of Hope program providing bikes and helmets for adults and children in need by partnering with Anne Arundel County Food Bank which houses the program along with partners AAMC, Anne Arundel County Police Bike Patrol and Bike Doctor Crofton
  • Launched our vision and website for the Anne Arundel Trail Network
  • Advocated to get bike shops deemed ” Essential Businesses” under the COVID guidelines
  • Anne Arundel & Annapolis secured the most grant dollars (>$3M) in the state for bikeways including South Shore Trail Phase 2 construction, BWI Spur Trail extension to Nursery Rd. design, and studies for closing bike network gaps in Annapolis
  • Over 100 free children’s helmets distributed through partners
  • Provided virtual bike safety programs for clubs and the public
  • Partner PedalPower Kids has taught more than 2,000 kids with learn to ride, safety and adventure programs including community outreach to underserved children
  • More than 1,000 BikeAAA members, over 2,400 contacts and over 1,600 on Facebook Group
  • All 5 major county cycling clubs are BikeAAA members – Annapolis Bicycle ClubAnnapolis Bicycle Racing TeamAnnapolis Triathlon Club, Severna Park Peloton and Velo City Riders
