Bike Maryland Leads A Coalition of Advocates Statewide

BikeAAA participates each year in a Bike Maryland coalition of advocates from across the state to advance legislation for safe biking, walking and infrastructure. Occasionally BikeAAA or Bike Maryland will call on you to contact your state delegate or senator to support a bill. This week we ask that you help us build support for local bill HB193 which empowers Anne Arundel County to reduce speed limits on certain roads. See more about this and others below.

HB193 Anne Arundel Speed Limits
This bill empowers the county to reduce speed limits on certain roads by 5mph in the same way as Montgomery County. We want Anne Arundel residents to contact your state delegate by Feb. 1 before a county delegation vote anticipated on Feb. 2. You can copy/paste this text or better yet, personalize it and then email it to your delegate this week!

Dear Delegate;

HB193 Anne Arundel County Speed Limits sponsored by Delegates Lehman and Pena-Melnyk will empower Anne Arundel County to assess and reduce speed limits. This is especially important for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, the elderly, people with disabilities and schoolchildren who may cross or travel along our roads to access schools, parks, shopping areas and other destinations. Local jurisdictions are most aware of the use and context of local roads and should have the authority to reduce speed limits to increase safety. This bill also aligns with Anne Arundel County’s and Maryland’s commitment to Vision Zero.

Speed reduction reduces both the likelihood of a crash and also the severity of injury if a crash occurs. Please support HB193 to improve safety, especially for our most vulnerable.

Feb 1 Bike Maryland Virtual Program on the Legislative Session
Want to help us advocate for better biking for ALL in Maryland? The 2024 legislative session has begun in Annapolis, and there are several great bills that may help cyclists safely navigate roads and enjoy more trails.

This online session will cover some of the basics of state legislative advocacy – how to identify your legislators, find and track bicycling-related bills, and submit written testimony. We’ll also hear some tips from experienced advocates and a little bit about what to expect from the upcoming Bike Maryland Symposium to be held in person on February 15 at Annapolis City Hall.

Feb 15 Bike Maryland Symposium
The Bike Maryland Symposium is a day in Annapolis where you can network with like-minded Maryland cyclists and advocates and your Maryland legislator to discuss Maryland cycling issues that matter to you

We will gather at the Annapolis City Hall, 160 Duke of Gloucester Street in the main hall. We will drink coffee, eat pastries, listen to State officials, review our advocacy plans for the 2024 session, and hear from the Bike Maryland leadership about the revitalized organization.

Symposium attendees will then walk to the Maryland State House and meet with Senators, Delegates and their staff to talk about our advocacy asks.
